“Flags of our Fathers” recounts the lives of three men who were involved in the flag raising(s) at Iwo Jima during World War 2. One marine is in love with himself; another is an alcoholic; the sailor comes off as basically a saint. The war scenes are brutal and shot in ‘almost’ black-and-white. This 132 minute film is jolting at times and makes the important point that the word ‘hero’ should never be used carelessly.
