The Oscars – And The Winner Isn’t… The Audience!

February 28, 2004

Billy Crystal is back! This bodes well for the huge audience that is invariably drawn to watch the most glamourous, yet dispirited of all awards shows.

Usually, the Academy Awards

Movies I dread to watch for 2004

February 28, 2004

WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT (Feb 20) Ramano is only good on TV. Doesn’t look all that funny.
DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS (Feb 27) I think that Swayze has a little part in this. It looks So-So.
STARSKY AND HUTCH (March 5) I am getting sick of Ben Stiler and Owen Wilson in the same movies! I wonder how many more they are gonna make together?!
JERSEY GIRL (March 19) Oh, My Lord. Another Bad one with those TWO in it!! I’m so glad they broke up!! Less bad movies to waste up film.
SHREK 2 (May 21) Might not work the second time around.
ALIEN vs. PREDATOR (August 9) Oh, goodness! I hope they don’t make more of these. FREDDY vs. JASON was horrible. Now this one! They left out Michael Myers!
MINDHUNTER (June 4) Looks confusing. Kilmer looks like the bad guy. Maybe it suppose to be like the movie SWAT?
I,ROBOT (July 19) Just don’t know.
AN UNFINISHED LIFE (Dec 24) Seems to me that Redford likes to play a cowboy or rancher. Does he love horses that much?! Then J.Lo is in it too…

What do you think?

Tom Clancy

February 28, 2004

I am about to go get one of these books, but is it worth the effort? I know that books are huge, but I did enjoy all of the movies. I have seen all of the them except Hunt for Red October and I am working on getting it. The video renting store and I had a bit of a disagreement I guess you could say. Anyways, I will like to read the Jack Ryan books, and would like to get someones opinion…

Does Anyone Really Care About The Oscars?

February 27, 2004

Does anyone care about this weekend’s Oscars? I always avoid covering award shows on this site because EVERYONE else covers them, and frankly I don’t think most people care about the awards as much as the hype suggests. Or am I wrong?

Let me give you all my Predictions so I’ll seem like I’m some sort of sage –ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLEJohnny Depp – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARLBen Kingsley – HOUSE OF SAND AND FOGJude Law – COLD MOUNTAINBill Murray – LOST IN TRANSLATIONSean Penn – MYSTIC RIVERMY PICKSEAN PENNWhile I would love to see Bill Murray win this thing, I don’t think the Academy will reward him this year because his body of work doesn’t yet warrant an award – especially since his roles are primarily comedy, and the Oscar voters don’t appreciate the art of comedy. Sean Penn will get this because he gave two strong performances in a single year, and has been doing so for awhile now. So it’s his time for it. ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLEAlec Baldwin – THE COOLERBenicio Del Toro – 21 GRAMSDjimon Hounsou – IN AMERICATim Robbins – MYSTIC RIVERKen Watanabe – THE LAST SAMURAIMY PICKTim RobbinsWhile I didn’t like “”Mystic River,”” well that’s a strong statement, I absolutely adored the first half of MR and even teared up, the film completely falls apart in the 3rd act. Robbins’ performance sort of irritated me in this, but I think he’ll get the award for his body of work, and not necessarily for this film.ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLEKeisha Castle-Hughes – WHALE RIDERDiane Keaton – SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVESamantha Morton – IN AMERICACharlize Theron – MONSTERNaomi Watts – 21 GRAMSMY PICKI think Diane Keaton will get it for her body of work, although I think Charlize Theron DESERVES it.ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLEShohreh Aghdashloo – HOUSE OF SAND AND FOGPatricia Clarkson – PIECES OF APRILMarcia Gay Harden – MYSTIC RIVERHolly Hunter – THIRTEENRen

“Club Dread”

February 26, 2004

“Club Dread” is simply dreadful. Did not see “…Troopers”. ***SPOILERS*** There is absolutely nothing for me to recommend unless someone loves to see people hacked or else cut in half by a rope. Save your time and money by skipping this loser.

GRADE = “D” (for dreadful)

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

February 26, 2004

Has anyone heard details about the expected Hitchhiker’s Guide movie ? I have read all 4 books in the HHG “Trilogy” and thought they were terrific. I also remember seeing the BBC television rendition on PBS years back. I can’t wait for this Douglas Adams classic to get the big screen treatment !
